SAFETY BASICS
Safety First
|
Before you start work assess the risks and take appropriate precautions to eliminate or reduce risks to an acceptable level.
|
Safety Last
|
The job’s not done until you’ve tidied up
|
Safety Always
|
Be alert for any hazards, fix them or report them |
SAFETY
- All incidents involving yourself must be reported to Reception immediately and an incident report completed.
- Fully enclosed shoes (in good condition), with a rubber sole must be worn at all times. If you arrive to class in open toed shoes, sandals, thongs, high heels etc. you will not be able to complete the class that day.
- Excessive jewellery is not advised as we are using moving sharp instruments such as scissors, secateurs etc. We ask that you don’t wear any oversized costume jewellery or long necklaces.
- Fire exits are located at the front and rear of the building. Exits must not be blocked or any action taken to compromise the fire safety system in any way.
- You are working in an environment where water is used constantly. Stems may also fall on the floor. Both of these hazards must be monitored, and preventative measures taken (floor swept regularly, mopped etc.).
- All waste materials must be disposed of in the correct bins provided.
IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY
An emergency incident may be caused by many hazards such as: fire, severe weather, power outage, an accident or physical threat. Matthew Landers Academy’s response to an emergency will be managed by the Warden or staff present. The warden/staff will issue instructions; it is essential that you follow all instructions.
As a student at Matthew Landers Academy there are a number of things you can do to assist emergency management. If you see an emergency situation or accident:
- Make sure anyone in immediate danger moves to a safe area (including yourself)
- Notify reception/your lecturer/member of staff
- What has happened and where
- If anyone has been injured or trapped
- Who you are and what action you have taken
If a member of the ML team cannot be contacted call emergency services on 000.
As soon as possible let Reception/ML Team member, know that you have called 000.
- Assist injured people and ensure no one else is in danger, without putting yourself at risk.
- Follow instructions issued the warden and/or ML staff
- Do not put your safety at risk.
IN A LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY
Go to Reception or call Emergency Services 000 (if you have called for Emergency Services, please inform Staff ASAP)
MEDICAL
- A First Aid kit is located within the Academy for minor cuts that may be sustained with sharp tools.
- If you have a Medi-Alert, please ensure you wear this to class.
- Should you carry an Epi Pen, please ensure this is noted in page 5.
FIRE
In the unlikely event of a fire on the premises, please note the following procedure:
- Evacuate the immediate area.
- Close any doors to prevent the spread of smoke and flame.
- Follow instructions issued the warden/ML staff.
- Do not put your safety at risk.
EVACUATION
An evacuation may be triggered automatically by the fire detection system or by the Warden/ML Staff in response to an incident. An evacuation may be preceded by the alert tone.
Alert Tone: BEEP, BEEP, BEEP (short loud beeps)
The alert tone is used to alert patrons to a possible emergency. This could mean that a smoke detector or alarm throughout the building has been triggered and to await further instruction.
Evacuation Tone: WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP (loud whining tone)
If you hear the evacuation tone, you will receive instructions from the warden/staff as you will be required to leave the building immediately by the nearest safe exit. Calmly follow the ML team member, walking at a steady pace without running or shouting to the assembly area.
ASSEMBLY AREA
Once outside the building staff and students should go to one of the assembly areas. At the assembly area there will be a warden who may give further instructions. You should inform the assembly area warden of any colleagues you believe to be missing.
Assembly area is the corner of Bailee Avenue and Albany Highway.
